Ps 72:16 May there be abundant grain throughout the land, flourishing even on the hilltops. May the fruit trees flourish like the trees of Lebanon, and may the people thrive like grass in a field.
Abundance—a very large quantity of something. Yes, that’s the definition, but what is it really and do we really need it? I believe it depends on what abundance you want. If you want an abundance of worldly things, I think not. Don’t misunderstand, for those who have every material thing and then some, I think what you do with the “extra” is more important than the having. Throughout the bible, God/Jesus taught the joy and blessing of giving. I truly believe that, if you have something someone else needs, give it to them.
In the early 1990s we needed a new car, something to transport kids, kid’s friends and others. We were going to church about 10 miles away and had started to bring others with us. We prayed and finally God blessed us with a van that seat eight comfortably. A Christian women’s conference was coming that I really wanted to attend. In thanksgiving to God, I volunteered to drive anyone who wanted to go. Several women rode with me. We had a great time. I felt truly blessed with abundance from God.
At one of our meals, I noticed Mary having an intense conversation with the cashier. I will never forget the surprise on that woman’s face when Mary left the restaurant. In the van, she asked if anyone had a bag or container she could use to put the contents of her wallet into. When I travel I keep freezer bags handy, so I gave her one. “What was going on with the cashier?” “The cashier admired my wallet and said she needed one, so I gave it to her.”
“But now you have no wallet. What will you do?”
“I will enjoy the rest of the conference, and not worry about not having a wallet, in fact I have a similar one at home.” We never saw the wallet receiver again, but I know the wallet was a testimony to her of God’s love for her.
