WORD OF THE DAY IS JOY

Ps 1:1-2 Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.

It is appropriate that we start with the first verses of the book of Psalms but it never dawned on me how important these words are. As a young Christian we are told all the “do’s and don’ts.” Choosing right from wrong is difficult on so many levels.  It is so comfortable to “hang” with old friends, going along with the crowd and taking the easy road. There are constant choices, go the old way (your way) or God’s way (the path planned before you were even born). Though God never promised an easy life, he did promise that everlasting life is worth the struggle and stay with you to help and guide you.

Many years ago our youngest son asked “Mom why do you follow laws and rules?” My first, gut reaction was, without laws, destruction and chaos would follow.  However, later in life I realized that laws and rules are the foundation of any society. Without them, you have nothing to stand on when life hits you right between the eyes. When living and believing that you have followed Gods laws, you can have the secure belief you did your best. Many times in life, I was able to know “without a doubt” that I made the right choice.

That is where the joy comes in. Joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. The problem is joy is not the first feeling that comes to mind when problems arise. As you think on the issue try to examine it through God’s eyes. Before long, you will see the bigger picture and be able to work through it. That is when the euphoria of God comes through and you finally feel the joy of the Lord.
